The Home Dedication
Ali and Lidiya are a refugee family, Ali is from Afghanistan and Lidiya is from Russia. Ali and Lidia both speak several different languages and have demonstrated great success in their English classes over the last year. They have been in Georgia for 3 years. Prior to their Habitat home, the family had lived in a 2 bedroom apartment. They have two boys aged 12 and 8 along with a baby girl. When asked why they wanted a Habitat home, they stated that they wanted more room and more safety.
They lived in a neighborhood where there was drug dealing and their boys’ bikes were stolen. Ali and his oldest son became fast favorites of our construction committee and volunteers because they were so committed to putting in their sweat equity hours.
When asked if their family was excited about their brand new Habitat home, Ali replied, “Yes! We have a home now, we are all very happy.”
The home was dedicated to the family with many dedicated volunteers in attendance. The home was built with funds from the Linda Perry Building Initiative. This initiative was funded by a bequest of $350,000 from Linda Perry, a long time resident of DeKalb County. This vibrant woman and beloved aunt’s bequest has so far helped four families become homeowners as was her wish.
We believe Ms. Perry was smiling down from heaven when her nephew, Perry Mitchell, passed the keys to Ali and Lidiya.
