DeKalb County Takes Groundbreaking Action: Comprehensive Plan to Tackle Housing Crisis
DeKalb County has taken a significant step forward by launching its first-ever comprehensive housing plan, which was unanimously approved by the Board of Commissioners.
This initiative focuses on addressing the rising housing crisis and ensuring that affordable housing is available to all residents. Key goals of the plan include boosting the supply of affordable housing, identifying gaps in current offerings, and gathering input from the community.
By collaborating with public and private partners, the plan aims to create lasting solutions. A $250,000 allocation will fund the development of the plan, which is expected to be finalized by November 2024.
The comprehensive plan will include several tools to address the housing crisis, including:
- Comprehensive Gap Analysis: Identifying specific housing affordability needs across the county to guide targeted solutions.
- Increased Housing Supply: Strategies to boost the production of new, affordable housing and preserve existing units.
- Cross-Sector Collaboration: Engaging public and private stakeholders to leverage resources and drive effective housing solutions.
- Community Engagement: Incorporating input from residents across DeKalb to inform and shape local housing initiatives.
- Policy and Funding Innovations: Streamlining processes, reducing costs, and introducing new financial tools to support housing affordability.
Over 50% of renters in DeKalb face housing insecurity, making this initiative critical to addressing the urgent need for more affordable options. With its completion, the county hopes to offer a pathway to more stable and affordable housing for its residents, ultimately easing the burden on families struggling with rising housing costs.
