A Veteran’s Story: Building Safety and Dignity at Home

When Anthony Hill Sr., a proud veteran, reached out to Habitat for Humanity DeKalb, his message carried both urgency and hope. His home, once a place of stability, had begun showing signs of strain. Damaged siding allowed rain to seep in, leading to mold growth in a downstairs room. For Anthony, the repair needs were more than cosmetic—they were affecting the safety and well-being of his family.

Anthony’s wife, living with a disability, faced daily challenges inside their home. Stairs without handrails made moving between floors risky and exhausting. The couple dreamed of turning the lower-level room into a second bedroom, providing her a safe space when navigating stairs became too difficult. But with mold spreading and repairs piling up, that vision seemed out of reach.

“I can manage a lot of things,” Anthony shared, “but keeping up with these repairs while caring for my wife has been overwhelming. I just want her to have a safe, accessible home.”

That’s where Habitat for Humanity DeKalb stepped in. Through the Veterans Home Repair program, volunteers and skilled staff partnered with Anthony to address the issues head-on. New siding sealed out water damage, mold remediation restored the air quality, and handrails were installed to provide much-needed safety on the stairs. Most importantly, the downstairs room was prepared to become the bedroom Anthony and his wife had long envisioned.

For Anthony, the repairs were more than fixes to his house—they were a restoration of dignity, peace of mind, and hope. “This work doesn’t just change our home,” he said. “It changes our lives. It means my wife can live safely, and I can rest knowing she has what she needs.”

Through the Veterans Home Repair program, Habitat for Humanity DeKalb honors the service of local veterans like Anthony by ensuring they can live safely and comfortably in the homes they’ve worked so hard to maintain.
