Big Max’s House Restored: A Haven for Family, Friends, and Laughter

Retired army veteran, Herbert, affectionately known as “Big Max”, is a true character. Always quick with a joke and full of laughter, he’s the kind of man who makes every gathering memorable. A family man to the core, Herbert has a reputation for his warmth and generosity—whether he’s sharing a home-cooked meal, offering a helping hand, or welcoming loved ones into his home, Big Max’s door is always open.

A Family Man with a Heart of Gold

Big Max isn’t just the life of the party; he’s the heart and soul of his family and community. He’s the type who’s always there with a smile and a kind word, turning even the simplest gathering into a celebration. Friends and family alike know they can count on him for a warm welcome, and he’s happiest when he’s surrounded by loved ones.

But recently, Big Max faced a challenge that even he couldn’t tackle on his own. A leak had gone unnoticed in his home, eventually rotting through a floor joist—the very structure that keeps floors solid and safe. Without a prompt fix, the damage could have threatened his home’s stability and, more importantly, his family’s safety. Beyond that, his home needed additional updates to make it safer and easier to navigate as he got older.

Restoring Safety and Comfort in Big Max’s Home

In came a team of dedicated State Farm volunteers through Habitat DeKalb, rolling up their sleeves to restore Big Max’s beloved home. The State Farm volunteers worked hard to repair the floor joist, shoring up the foundation that his home rests on. They reinforced his handrails and installed grab bars in his bathrooms, making sure he had the support he needed.

“Habitat’s help to me and my wife has been overwhelming. We are grateful for everything they have done to make our living easier and enjoyable as we now approach 80 years of age,” Herbert expressed earnestly. “The volunteers all helped with a kind, caring heart and made me feel special to be honored through their service to me. God Bless Habitat DeKalb!”

Now, Big Max’s home is not only safe and sound, but it’s also better equipped for years to come, allowing him to keep doing what he loves most—gathering with loved ones, sharing his laughter, and spreading joy. Thanks to the State Farm volunteers and supporters like you, Herbert’s home is a haven once again, and the parties are just getting started.
