Homefront Heroes: Habitat DeKalb’s Heartfelt Tribute
On November 11, 2024, Habitat for Humanity DeKalb hosted a special breakfast gathering at the home of Mr. Douglas, a veteran and homeowner we’ve had the honor to serve. This event was a chance to recognize the service and sacrifices of our veteran homeowners while celebrating the impact of safe, accessible housing.
Stories of Service and Gratitude
During the event, several veteran homeowners took a moment to share their stories, reflecting on their military backgrounds and the transformative support they received from Habitat DeKalb. A shared sentiment of feeling “blessed and grateful to the Lord” for Habitat’s presence echoed through their words, reminding everyone in attendance of the powerful difference that community and compassion can make.
Hands-On Support and Generous Giving
The day was further highlighted by volunteers from Decide DeKalb and Wells Fargo, who dedicated their time to make essential repairs to Mr. Douglas’s home. From repairing water-damaged kitchen floors to restoring electrical outlets, installing grab bars along the basement stairs, and building a small ramp to the exterior side door, these volunteers exemplified the skill and care that Habitat DeKalb brings to each project.
In addition to their hands-on service, Wells Fargo presented Habitat DeKalb with a generous $15,000 check to support our mission. And in a deeply moving gesture, one of our veteran homeowners, on a day meant to honor him, contributed a significant donation, symbolizing the cycle of giving that fuels our work. Contributions from supporters like him—and from everyone involved—make a lasting impact on the lives of others, just as we strive to do for Mr. Douglas.
With the support of our partners, volunteers, and generous donors, Habitat DeKalb continues to build hope, transform lives, and honor those who have served.
