Restoring Dignity, One Home at a Time: Bernard’s Story
A Home Built on Pride and Purpose
When Bernard purchased his home in 2009, it represented more than just a roof over his head—it was a symbol of hard work, stability, and the freedom to enjoy his retirement in peace. As a veteran, Bernard understands the meaning of service and sacrifice. His home was meant to be a haven—a place where he could rest, reflect, and feel secure.

The Wear and Tear of Time
But as the years passed, the home that once brought comfort began to show serious signs of aging. The front steps became unstable and dangerous. The rear deck had weakened boards and loose railings. The roof could no longer hold up against the elements. Inside, faulty electrical fixtures, worn out water heater, and a leaking ceiling in the hall bathroom made everyday tasks more difficult and less safe.
Like many older homeowners, Bernard found himself facing repairs that were essential—but out of reach.

A Hand Up from Habitat DeKalb
That’s when Habitat for Humanity DeKalb stepped in. Through our Home Repair Program, Bernard received critical repairs that brought new life to his home. His roof was replaced. The hazardous front steps and back deck were rebuilt. Electrical issues were corrected, and a damaged ceiling was patched.
