Together, We’re Building More Than Homes
Families like Shantescia’s remind us why we do what we do. She dreams of providing a safe, stable home for her daughters—a place they can truly call their own. Through Habitat for Humanity DeKalb, and with the support of generous donors, volunteers, and partners like you, that dream is becoming a reality.
What began as a vacant lot in Stone Mountain has transformed into a symbol of restoration, perseverance, and hope fulfilled.
From Vacancy to Vision
At the end of a quiet cul-de-sac in Stone Mountain stood a vacant lot—empty for more than 20 years. The home that once stood there had burned down, leaving behind only a foundation and the memories of what used to be. Neighbors often shared how the lot had been untouched since they moved to the area, and when they learned a Habitat home would soon rise there, their excitement was contagious.
After a thorough inspection, we received the news that the original foundation was still sound—a rare and unexpected blessing. Once we got the green light, the work began. On May 15, 2025, we broke ground on what would become a new beginning for Shantescia and her daughters.
The first volunteer team, State Farm, arrived the following week to frame the first walls. Before long, the structure began to take shape—the frame, sheathing, and roof quickly standing as signs of progress and purpose.
Building with Hands and Hearts
Behind every nail and brushstroke was the dedication of volunteers who gave their time, energy, and care. During the early stages, contractors and volunteers worked side by side to install electrical wiring, plumbing lines, insulation, HVAC systems, and more—though none of it was connected just yet. Step by step, the pieces of a home came together.
Installing the house wrap was one of the more tedious but essential tasks. Volunteers built and rebuilt scaffolding, carefully wrapping and nailing each section to protect the home from the elements. It wasn’t just physical work—it took teamwork, problem-solving, and trust. Contractors later installed the siding, and soon after, volunteers painted the exterior and trim, giving the home its first real glimpse of life.
Throughout the build, stud sponsors and volunteers signed messages on the wooden beams—blessings, prayers, and words of encouragement for the future homeowner. Some wished her luck, others left scriptures, and a few even reminded her to “call State Farm” when the time came. Beneath the drywall now rests a living testimony to love, faith, and community—messages forever sealed into the walls of the home.
A Family Chosen, A Dream Taking Shape
As construction continued, Habitat DeKalb selected Ms. Shantescia (Shan) as the future homeowner. For Shan, this wasn’t just about receiving a house—it was about reclaiming stability, independence, and peace for her family. She poured her own sweat equity into the project, working alongside volunteers and learning every step of the process.
When drywall went up and the interior painting began, the transformation became unmistakable. Volunteers installed doors, trim, shelves, and countertops. The crew built permanent steps, added kitchen features, and even constructed a beautiful deck overlooking the spacious backyard. Inside, light fixtures, flooring, and carpet brought warmth and life to the rooms.
A Celebration of Faith and Community
By the time of the Home Dedication Ceremony, the home had power, light, and nearly every finishing touch—except running water, which would come soon after the final plumbing work and the certificate of occupancy.
At the dedication, a volunteer from Publix, the home’s leading sponsor, reflected on how much the house had changed since she first helped install house wrap earlier that summer. Many returning volunteers echoed that same amazement—seeing the transformation week after week reminded them what can happen when a community unites around a shared purpose.
Neighbors came out to welcome Shan and her daughters to the neighborhood. Tears filled her eyes as she expressed her gratitude for everyone who played a part in building her family’s future—from staff and sponsors to volunteers, donors, and community members.
Still Building, Still Thankful
As we await the final touches—landscaping, plumbing fixtures, and the official certificate of occupancy—our hearts are full. This home is more than walls and windows; it’s a testimony of what’s possible when people come together to love their neighbors.
To everyone who volunteered, donated, prayed, or spread the word: thank you. Because of your generosity, a once-vacant lot is now a place of laughter, security, and belonging. This Thanksgiving, we’re reminded that when we build together, we don’t just create homes—we build hope, dignity, and lasting change.
